Un monument du western, signé Fred ZINNEMAN! Le shérif Will KANE (Gary COOPER) seul face à quatre tueurs, dont le rassemblement final se fera à midi pile, avec l'arrivée par le train d'un Franck MILLER ivre de vengeance…

La voie vide vers l'horizon symbolise la menace qui se profile et qui prendra corps lorsque, pour s'annoncer, le train sifflera trois fois… En attendant, l'ennemi, c'est la pendule…

Le film a remporté quatre oscars en 1952: meilleur acteur pour un Gary COOPER énorme, meilleur montage et surtout meilleure musique, signée Dimitri Tiomkin, et meilleure chanson, dont les paroles de Ned WASHINGTON sont en totale harmonie avec le thème de TIOMKIN. Inoubliable! …

Il est amusant de remarquer que la traduction française n'a pas grand-chose à voir avec le titre original: "High Noon" (littéralement "en plein midi', l'"heure de vérité" au sens figuré) devient "Le train sifflera trois fois"… La sensibilité n'étant pas la même des deux côtés de l'Atlantique, les américains préfèrent insister sur l'heure d'arrivée, les Français sur l'avertissement… Au bout du compte, le résultat est le même: à midi, après que le train ait sifflé trois fois, Gary COOPER est "dans la panade"…

Quant au titre original de la chanson thème (do not forsake me) interprété par Tex RITTER, il n'a pas été pas été trop "trahi" par son titre français (Si toi aussi tu m'abandonnes)…

The movie won four Academy Awards in 1952: best actor for a "huge" Gary COOPER, best editing and above all best soundtrack, by Dimitri TIOMKIN, and best song, which lyrics by Ned WASHINGTON are in full harmony with TIOMKIN theme. Unforgettable! ...

It is funny to notice that French translation has not much to do with the original title: "High Noon"(literally "exactly at noon", with a meaning of intensity, and "moment of truth" in the figurative sense) is turn into "Train will whistle three times"… Perception being different depending on the side of Atlantic Ocean, American insists on the event time, French prefers to put the stress on the given warning… In the end, result is the same: at high noon, after the train whistled three times, Gary COOPER is "in the soup"…

As for the original title of theme song (do not forsake me) performed by Tex RITTER, it has not been too much spoiled by its French title (si toi aussi tu m'abandonnes).
